The league was originally founded in 1946 as the BAA (Basketball association of America. The league adopted the name NBA in 1949 after joining with the NBL (National Basketball League). The NBA we know today holds 30 teams in 2 conferences divided by East and West.

The NBA has a minor league afflation known as the Devlopment league (D-League). This is were players can train and play till they bcome good enough to play in the NBA.
